The chill of winter may still be in the air, but it’s not too early to take a look ahead at what will be the hot new fashions for spring. Top designers at this year’s runway shows unveiled all-American trends that can transform wallflowers into fashionistas as quickly as you can say “closet makeover.” From striped nautical styles and preppy plaids to the subdued hues of the desert, I’ll show you how adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe can help keep it up-to-date.
As the creator of the Kim Parrish Collection found on HSN (Home Shopping Network & HSN.com), I’m constantly searching for those new must-have items which can easily update our existing wardrobes. After all, many of us already have a closet full of “everything” and still “nothing” to wear! So how do we take what’s become boring and make it brilliant without breaking the bank? We need to recycle our basics and pair them up with some of the season’s hottest trends.
The most popular trend for spring 2007 is the “Nautical” motif. It’s a revival of clean classics, patriotic stripes, rope details, and brass accents which conjure up images of leisurely vacations at quaint New England shore towns.
“The simplest way to introduce the nautical trend into your wardrobe is by coupling a new, bold striped sweater in red, blue or yellow with an old pair of white pants. Instant nautical!” says Paula Graffunder, Philadelphia wardrobe stylist. “And don’t forget to finish off the look with a sleek pair of peep-toed, red patent leather shoes and big, bold sunglasses.”
Take a small step away from the nautical motif and you’ll find the next trend for spring, dainty representations that fashion experts have labeled the “American Pie” look. This style evokes everything we love about Americana. Gingham checks, madras, tablecloth plaids, eyelet and Swiss dots join with a strong mix of patriotic plaids to form country flair in fashion.
“If you want to bring one new item into your closet to represent the spirit of this style, I would suggest an eyelet wrap dress. This silhouette looks great on all body types. Everyone can wear a wrap dress! All the major designers are working with eyelet and I’ve found it really brings out a woman’s feminine side” said Graffunder.
Lastly, the “Safari” look rounds out the key fashion styles for spring. It boasts neutral shades mixed with tailored silhouettes to give your wardrobe a casual, yet chic look. Shirt dresses with epaulettes, khaki walking shorts and updated cargo pants define this design scheme.
“The easiest way to capture the inspiration of the desert is to wear your basic, khaki Bermuda shorts with a tailored white button-down shirt. Roll up your sleeves, and throw on a rich, brown leather belt and sandals - you’ve created a safari ensemble from last year’s preppy clothes” said Graffunder.
Whatever your style, you’re sure to find some great seasonal pieces this spring that can add just the right amount of fashion flair to what you already own. Remember, it’s not about buying a completely new wardrobe every season, but simply adding a few key items that will renew and refresh your classic basics. |
