Who drives what we buy in the fashion arena?

Oprah Winfrey is the richest woman in American and most likely the most influential.  Last week Oprah had Sarah Blakely on her program discussing how Spanx can take inches off and make you firm and tight.  Sales will spike after her visit.  Spanx are as wonderful as Oprah states and you will find them in area stores.  They are a big item with prom and pageant girls.

Speaking of prom, girls have been choosing many types of gowns this year.  Nicole Miller has been a favorite of several girls who are looking for quality and something that doesn’t look like “a prom dress.”  These are great choices as they will make a statement as well as allowing you to have something that can be worn for some time to come.

Expense is often on the back burner as people state “prom is a special event and my daughter is worth it”.  Several girls have chosen Whitting and Davis collector purses that will be shared among family members.  It will look great for prom and will be a wonderful accent piece with jeans.

Friends are also someone who drives popularity.  Some girls like to be different but most often if one girl decides on a silk and sleek look her friends will follow.  The Red Carpet look definitely remains one of the most popular looks.  The Award shows this time of year play a major role in style choice.  What is seen on the red carpet sells style.

When a girl falls in love with a dress in a magazine she will stop at nothing to get the dress.  One cover gown didn’t happen to make the manufacture’s web site or catalog so the company e-mailed a full picture and information.  The customer came into the store with a poster size reprint of the gown as she loved it that much.  Even though the dress turned out to be tea length rather than full, love overtook the customer and nothing else would do.

Boyfriends also drive the style selection.  It is not unusual to hear a guy say, “I want to wear a pink vest this year so I want my girl in a pink gown.”

Father’s tend to put their foot down when their little princess doesn’t look the part. Grandparents are also a big consideration.  “My grandmother would have a COW if she saw me in this kind of dress.”  I love it though.  And then a major decision has to be made.  Do I purchase what I like or do I make my family happy. A compromise is often the end result.

In the end, when prom comes, each and every girl will be fabulous in her special gown and accessories and everyone will feel proud for being a part of the decision process.
